PARTICIPANT

S URVEY

“The emphases on intensive personal involvement in naturally occurring situations, and on nonquantitative methods, have traditionally been crucial” (Horgan, M 2013). Horgan highlights that the effect of personal involvement within research methods allows an Ethnographer to be able to understand their audience better.

To understand my audience better I decided to create a survey to better understand the effect that the show is having on audience members. I posted a link to the survey in a number of different Facebook Groups that discusses the show which provided me with an understanding of its effect.

After receiving 60 responses from participants I found that 68.33% of audience members believe that they are innocent, 15% believe he is guilty and 16.67% are unsure.

I also asked participants whether or not they felt like the documentary influenced their support of the two men with 70% of participants feeling like it had and 30% believing it hadn't.

One participant in particular said that the show "possibly" influenced them "but I watched it twice and was even more convinced of their innocence" and another saying "yes. The sheer manipulation of the edits made me realise the TV show was trying to push a narrative as opposed to actually being a non biased documentary".

I also asked participants whether or not they agreed with the narrative that the documentary presented and I found that 73% of people agreed where as only 23% disagreed.
