RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

In conducting research into the effect that 'Making a Murderer' has on its audience, I have been able to gain a better understanding into how fans are being influenced.

Utilising the course content and secondary research, I have been able to create a foundation for the basis of my study and have discovered through TV ratings the success and power of the docu-series.

In observing public spheres within Facebook that discuss the docu-series, I have found that fans are having lively debates with each other. It shows that even if the fans are not supporting the narrative of the documentary, an emotional reaction is still elicited from the show's release.

The results from the survey allowed me to uncover why they began supporting Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and just how big of a role the docu-series is playing in it. Through the response that I gathered from the survey, it can be concluded that a larger portion of audience members are swayed by the construction of the show and it is mostly the sole reason why they have become avid supporters in wanting to overturn their convictions.

Interviewing people within these groups contributes to this idea as respondents revealed that they were aware of the influence that the editing style of the show was having on not only themselves but with other fans. One participant in particular was compelled to research beyond the show and from it became a supporter of the men.

In researching the effect that 'Making a Murderer' has on fans I have learnt that editing of the show has played a significant part in influencing fans to begin supporting the case. Participants have shown that the docu-series has been the main reason that they have become supporters and how they discovered the case.
